Oil and Water Deep Well Level Sensor and Pump Control
Abstract
Modtech invented and developed technology to measure fluid levels and control pumps in oil and other deep wells.
Client's Goal
Critically detect the fluid level in deep wells so that a pump may be controlled to maintain an optimal level. This is important because too much fluid creates a pressure head that slows inflow (production). Too little fluid results in pumping gas that deposits paraffin and leads to very expensive maintenance.
Ideation
Use sonic imaging or robust downhole sensors to achieve accurate, high-resolution fluid level measurement.
Engineering and design deliverables
Develop electronic, mechanical, and fluid dynamic components to implement level metrology systems. Starting with field studies of application requirements, circuit schematics are developed, printed circuit boards designed, firmware and software systems implemented, and system integrated for field testing.
Intellectual property development
Concurrent with engineering and design, patent applications are developed and prosecuted to issuance.
Performance evaluation
Field installation of systems on multiple oil wells demonstrated the efficacy of two designs in the targeted application.
Commercialization
Assistance with field testing and demonstration to prospective end users put the client over the first hurdles in route to a commercial success.
